Principal Software Engineer (95% Remote, 5% On-site)

UDR is seeking qualified candidates for a Principal Software Engineer position for our customer in Aiken, SC supporting the Savannah River Site. Close Date: 10/23/2025. Job #1458.

Specific Duties

  • Keep assigned applications operational by testing product upgrades, providing customer support and problem?solving customer issues.
  • Plan information systems and services from the perspective of application design, development, installation, or database administration in accordance with SRNS IT processes and procedures.
  • Provide tactical design, engineering, technical specifications, project coordination, and configuration management for moderately complex IT solutions.
  • Assist more senior technical personnel in performing related activities in moderately complex tasks.
  • Work closely with the Software Professional Lead and the customer/owner to understand and apply functional and system requirements.
  • Maintain technical expertise in assigned emphasis areas and demonstrate flexibility in multiple disciplines.
  • Proactively communicate and coordinate with others across IT to provide support for assigned areas.
  • Perform root cause analysis and outline corrective action for complex problems.
  • Ensure continued service of customer applications through prompt correction of system or program malfunctions.
  • Master software engineering tools such as configuration management systems, change management, vulnerability scanning, and debuggers in the software development process.
  • Lead the analysis and development of requirements, design specifications, and final products by reviewing systems documentation, plans, and schedules produced by less experienced personnel.
  • Train less experienced personnel in development of requirements, specifications, technical products, and existing business processes.
  • Lead moderate sized initiatives and projects by establishing tasks, priorities, milestones, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Conduct feasibility studies of automation opportunities and establish cost?benefit parameters.
  • Develop test plans and execute them to ensure software correctness.
  • Participate in validation and efficiency reviews of completed program code.
  • Review policies and procedures for technical accuracy.
  • Participate in cross?functional IT teams.
  • Evaluate new requests, offer suggestions to improve, provide comments and estimates of effort for moderately complex IT solutions.
  • Provide support for the software infrastructure associated with the system environments.
  • Maintain cyber posture and compliance required to maintain federal authority to operate.
  • Perform installations and upgrades to software and databases for maintaining vendor support and strategic agility.
  • Plan for future database system requirements, including disaster recovery and storage requirements.
  • Protect operations by keeping information confidential.

Required Qualifications: Education & Experience
  • Education: Bachelors degree in an IT related discipline (Information Technology, Computer Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering) with 7 years proven performance in related assignments; or non?related Bachelors degree with 9 years proven performance; or Associate Degree in IT related discipline with 9 years; or non?related Associate Degree with 11 years; or high school diploma with at least 13 years equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Experience/Skills:
    1. Knowledge of academic and practical aspects of Software Engineering.
    2. Ongoing technical development in Software Engineering.
    3. Applied understanding of software development fundamentals/methodology and database infrastructure.
    4. Programming skills that include analysis, design, requirements, testing, documentation, problem solving, debugging.
    5. Proficiency with software engineering tools such as configuration management, change management, scanning, debuggers.
    6. Ability to work with minimal direction and supervision to complete projects in a timely manner.
    7. Advanced knowledge of discipline theories, concepts, principles, techniques.
    8. 15+ years experience in software engineering related positions, including minimum 10 years on DOE projects.
    9. Experience participating in systems engineering teams with responsibilities including software engineering and program development to support systems engineering initiatives.
    10. Ability to work independently and within a multi?discipline team.
    11. Prior SRS experience and knowledge of SRNS processes.
    12. Occasional travel required.


  • Other Required Qualifications:

    Candidate must obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance. Active clearance is not initially required; after award the candidate will be notified to apply for clearance based on specific work assignments.

    Candidate must have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years.
