The Part-Time Lab Technician performs urinalysis on probationers as ordered by the courts and referred by Community Supervision Officers. This position ensures accurate testing, proper documentation, and compliance with all chain-of-custody procedures to detect illicit substance or alcohol use.
Major Duties

  • Collects urine samples from male defendants for substance abuse and alcohol testing, as ordered by the court, supervision officer, or Averhealth system.
  • Prepares, packages, and completes paperwork for daily test shipments to Averhealth Systems for scheduled FedEx/UPS pickup at 3:00 p.m.
  • Enters test results and fees into Corrections Software.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the lab area.
  • Ensures proper chain of custody for all urine samples.
  • Testifies in court proceedings when required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
LANGUAGE SKILLS
The ideal candidate will have the ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. They must be able to write clear and accurate reports and correspondence, as well as communicate effectively with both individuals and groups. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.

REASONING ABILITY
Candidate must have the ability to solve practical problems and adapt when working with limited standardization. They should also be able to interpret instructions presented in various forms, including written, oral, diagram, and schedule formats.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Six months to one year of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
  • This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
