This position is responsible for participating the preparation of meals for residents of the county jail.
Major Duties

  • Purchases food supplies from contracted providers.
  • Maintains kitchen inventory of equipment, supplies, and food.
  • Maintains the temperature of freezers and food items.
  • Cooks meals in accordance with menus prepared and approved by the dietician.
  • Stores food in designated areas.
  • Cleans work areas, equipment, and utensils.
  • Serves meals as needed.
  • Prepare food for special diets.
  • Removes garbage; cleans garbage containers.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods of preparing meals in quantity lots.
  • Knowledge of cooking times and temperatures of various foods and methods of preserving the flavor
of food.
  • Knowledge of the principles of personal and food sanitation.
  • Skill in the preparation and serving of food.
  • Skill in cleaning and sanitizing kitchens and kitchen tools, and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment.
  • Skill in maintaining routine records.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least one ( 1 ) year of customer service experience.

Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related food preparation duties. The variety of duties contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to prepare food for jail inmates. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of nutritious meals to inmates.

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

  • Must possess a valid and current driver's license.
  • Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and criminal background checks are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.
