VAC Student Worker

"Primary Purpose:The vocational experience program is an instructional arrangement/setting for providing special education and related services to a student who is placed on a job with regularly scheduled direct involvement by special education personnel in the implementation of the student's IEP. This instructional arrangement/setting shall be used in conjunction with the student's individual transition plan and only after the school district's career and technology classes have been considered and determined inappropriate for the student.

Qualifications:Education/Certification:

Student must be at least 16 years old, have successfully completed two (2) years of high school, and on course to earn 22 state credits without the Supported Employment courses.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

The following objectives must be mastered to be a candidate for the work program:

a) Candidates must be able to obtain and complete applications

b) Candidates must secure transportation

c) Candidates must have 90% attendance

d) Candidates must have discipline referrals reviewed by the VAC.

Experience:

In order to receive a paying job, the student must be willing to obtain or provide the following documents before they receive Supported Employment services:

? Social Security Card

? Driver's License or State ID

Major Responsibilities and Duties:Maintain employment. Keep your VAC informed of all changes.

Be in attendance 90% of the time. Students must check-in daily to verify attendance.

Verify employment with pay stubs or other designated proof every two weeks.

Turn in an employer's evaluation every nine weeks.

Retain the same employment for at least one semester

Student must work a minimum of 5 hours per week per scheduled period of vocational experience class.

If you become unemployed as a vocational experience student, you will be provided a full instructional day at school during the time you are without a job. If you cannot obtain employment within the two-week allotted time frame, you will be placed back into the classes you would normally be enrolled.

The student will abide by all high school handbook rules while on campus. He/she should remember that the worksite is part of his/her educational program and should abide by the rules of the workplace.

The last nine weeks of the school year, you must maintain the same place of employment; otherwise, you are subject to failure for the fourth (9 weeks) grading period.

Any student absent from school may not work that day without approval from the VAC.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping

Motion: Moderate walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
